A "Sweet" Success!
Many, many thanks to the hundreds of
students and their families who came out
yesterday to Main Street Sweets for The
Teachers' Association of the Tarrytowns
Scoops for Scholarships fundraiser! The
smiles (and lines) were endless as the
teachers got to reconnect with past
students and see current ones all for a
great cause. The teachers developed a
whole new skill set and a few new
muscles as they scooped, mixed and
topped the many orders. The students
LOVED to give the teachers "orders" for
a change! The final tally is not in yet
but it was a rousing success! It would
not have been possible without the
family owned Main Street Sweets being
such fantastic hosts and donors to a
District tradition, the TAT Scholarship.

Eat a Rainbow
Everyday
This
year the Foundation for the Public
Schools of the Tarrytowns awarded a
grant to Jeanne McLaurin MS, MEd, RD a
local dietitian and parent in our school
system. Mrs. McLaurin has created a
nutrition program for elementary school
students called Eat a Rainbow Everyday.
During March, which is national
nutrition month, Mrs. McLaurin met with
the 1st and 2nd
Grade students at Morse School. She
encouraged the 1st graders
to include a Rainbow of fruits and
vegetables in their diets everyday. And
the 2nd graders learned about
healthy snack options.
Additionally, Mrs.
McLaurin will hold separate workshops
for parents providing basic nutrition
information and tips for feeding a

Warner Library
Ready to Offer Free SAT Math Prep
Workshop Three Sundays, April 14, 21,
and 28, 2013, 1:30 – 3:30PM
In April, the Warner Library will offer
a FREE series of preparatory SAT Math
Workshops. The two hour sessions will
be held on three consecutive Sundays:
April 14, April 21 and April 28, from
1:30 – 3:30 pm. College- bound high
school students who have registered for
the SAT or who plan to take the SAT in
the future are invited to attend. The
workshop will highlight math topics that
have a high probability of appearing on
the test and that frequently trigger
questions by students who prepare for
the SAT. Each session will provide
insight into the non-intuitive aspects
of the test and review test questions
that differ from those typically seen in
high school math classes. The series
will review mathematics that will assist
students intending to take the ACT
college entrance exam, too. The second
session in particular, which focuses on
Geometry formulas and problems, covers
the most material that overlaps both the
SAT and ACT exams.
Students who attend the workshop will
receive a package of materials designed
to supplement the practice problems in
any other SAT study guide or practice
test. The workshop package includes
detailed sample questions plus a minimum
of 20 practice problems per topic. The
practice problems are sorted in order of
difficulty; “hints” offer useful points
of departure or reminders of common test
pitfalls.
Young Adult Librarian Elizabeth Siracusa
says “The Warner Library is really
pleased to be able to offer a program
that may improve students’ test scores
and thereby their chances of qualifiying
for the college of their choice as well
as other scholastic opportunities and
awards. Since good test taking is part
acquired skill, the adage that ‘practice
makes perfect’ is very applicable, and
being able to tackle something like a
math problem with more confidence can
turn failure into success. A program
like this is often too costly for
parents and young people to afford,
especially with additional demands being
placed on families in today’s economic
climate. By presenting an opportunity
like this, the library feels it is able
to bring something value-added to the
community and fulfill a need not easily
met. We’re helping students reach their
educational goals and fulfilling our
mission too”.
The workshop will be presented by
Barbara Files, a licensed mathematics
teacher, SAT test prep coach, and
Tarrytown resident. According to Ms.
Files, “Solid SAT scores give students
more options for their college
education. Students set themselves up
to do their best when they take the time
to familiarize themselves with the SAT
before test day.” Ms. Files, who holds
an MBA degree from New York University’s
Stern School of Business and an MS
degree in Education from Pace
University, explains how students take
comfort in the fact that the SAT has
evolved. “They find it hard to believe
that their parents’ generation took the
SAT without calculators.”
Registration is required for the 3
session workshop by visiting the
Reference Desk at the Warner library or
calling 914-631-7734. Students are asked
to bring a pencil and notebook as well
as the calculator they intend to use for
the SAT (graphing calculators are
recommended for having the most helpful
features. Elizabeth Siracusa can be
contacted at the library if you have
questions or need additional
information. (Posted
