The Sleepy Hollow golf team concluded its season on Tuesday, May 23rd by earning a tie against Hastings High School at the St. Andrews Club. Andrew Palazzi, the lone senior on the team, won the final match of his high school career.   Devin Mahoney and Jimmy Bender, playing the 1 and 2 spots respectively, played poorly and lost their matches.  Jimmy Bender finished his inaugural season with a blistering 8 – 1 record, often matched up against players five year older than himself.  Carey Robinson, who has experienced the highs and lows this year, tied his match and earned the team a crucial half point.  Marco Baran earned the team’s scoring title for the second year in a row, in spite of shooting a 52.  He finished the season with a record of 6 –2 –2.  Kelly Bender continued her great play and shot the lowest score on the team - a 49 on a tough, hilly course.  Kelly also finished the season with an 8 – 1 record.

The team finished with an overall record of 4 wins, 4 losses and 3 ties.  This year’s team was bolstered by the addition of new young players like Jimmy Bender, Ian Hummell and Rob Capposela.  There is a greater sense of competition among the players, which helps to hone their intensity and their level of play.    (Posted 5/25/2006)

Varsity Golf
The Sleepy Hollow Golf Team easily defeated Mount Vernon on Thursday, May 18th seven to zero at Saxon Woods Golf Club in White Plains.  Devin Mahoney played a great round shooting 5 over on seven holes before the match was called due to thunderstorms.  Marco Baran who shot a great 43 on Sleepy Hollow Country Club the previous day, also won his match.  Jimmy Bender improved his rookie record to 8– 0, he has been a great sparkplug for the team.  Carey Robinson also won his match and has been playing inspired golf with a renewed sense of confidence in his driver.  Ian Hummel and Lloyd Ellman struggled but each earned a point for the team.  Ian has shown tremendous improvement over the season and even shot a 47 on the front-nine of Sleepy Hollow Country Club.  The team currently has a record of 4 – 4 – 2, and will finish up with Hastings at St. Andrews on Tuesday, May 23rd.

On a cold, windy and rainy day, the Sleepy Hollow Golf team teed off against Pleasantville at Whippoorwill Country Club in Armonk.  Devin Mahoney and Marco Baran both lost their matches at the 1 and 2 spots.  Marco Baran got off to a terrible start on the first hole and struggled with the greens all day long.  Jimmy Bender, playing at the 3-spot, defeated his opponent 2-up by sinking a long putt on the final off from just off the green.  He improved his record to 5 – 0.  Rob Capposela shot a good round of 48 but it was not enough as he lost 3 + 2.  Carey Robinson played his career best round and easily defeated his opponent 4 + 2.  Carey missed his first career birdie when a five-foot putt just lipped the cup. Kelly Bender continued her sensational play winning her fifth straight match.  Her record is now 5 – 1.  The team is currently 3 – 3 – 2 and they face off against Pleasantville at Sleepy Hollow Country Club on Wednesday, May 10th.

The Sleepy Hollow Golf Team tied with Valhalla on Wednesday, April 26th at Sleepy Hollow Country Club.  The conditions were ideal for golf – the fairways were plush, the greens true, and the sky blue.  Devin Mahoney got off to an early start but missed a short putt on the eighth green to lose the hole and end up in a tie.  Seventh grader, Jimmy Bender, continued his stellar play by defeating his opponent 3 and 2.  Marco Baran also got off to an early start but a couple of bad tee shots resulted in a tie.  Max Rosen, playing in his first match ever, recorded an easy victory over his opponent.  The team currently has a record of 1-2-1.  It faces off against Valhalla on Tuesday, May 2nd at Centennial Golf Club.  (Posted 4/28/2006)

Sleepy Hollow Golf Team lost its match yesterday to Irvington 4 ½ points to 2 ½ points.  The match was quite close but in the end Irvington narrowly edged out the Horsemen.  In the first match, Marco Baran lost a 2-up lead over the final three holes to lose 1-down.  Devin Mahoney struck the ball well but had a difficult time with his putter.  Carey Robinson, who had been playing very well of late, shot a 51 on the lower course to earn a tie and a half point.  Kelly Bender easily defeated her opponent and scored a full point for the team.  The bright spot was Jimmy Bender, the seventh grader, who shot an impressive 47 on his first match at Sleepy Hollow.  He defeated his opponent 2 & 1 and earned a full point for the team.  Jimmy missed a couple of short putts, which would have given him a 45 and the medalist honors.  (Posted 4/20/2006)

Varsity Golf
The Varsity Golf team teed off on April 4, 2006 against Albertus Magnus at Rockland Country Club.  The weather was not ideal for golf – cold with howling winds, gusting up to 20 miles per hour.  Marco Baran, the MVP of the team last season, showed his mettle by shooting a 45, the low round of the day.  The other veteran, Devin Mahoney, shot a 51.  Making their debuts, junior Rob Caposella and seventh-grader Jimmy Bender both shot 52’s.  Kelly Bender and Carey Robinson both shot 54’s and hope to improve on their play.  Although Sleepy Hollow lost, it lowered its cumulative score in the first match of the season by 47 combined strokes from last season.  The team plans to continue working hard and improve over the season. (Posted 4/6/2006)

golfAlthough spring has not yet brought in the warm weather, the golf team began its practices on March 13th.  This year has brought in a host of new players.  Seventh graders Jim “Boom Boom” Bender and Tom “not Tim” Carraro bring a youthful exuberance to the team.  Sophomore Ian Hummel and junior Rob Caposella hope to contribute to the team this season.  The two veterans, junior Devin Mahoney and sophomore Marco Baran will anchor the team.  These two are expecting breakout years after gradually improving over the past several seasons.  Eighth grader Kelly Bender who was the team’s “rookie of the year” last season continues to improve her play.  Juniors Max Rosen and Carey Robinson will also be competing for playing spots.  The team has its first match at Rockland Country Club on April 4th.  The players are reminded of the tremendous opportunity they have in playing some of the top courses in the area.  “A bad day at golf is better than a good day at work (or school)!”  (Posted 3/27/2006)
